America, poetry

This Flag

So let me break it down for you again…
While you’re mad about a flag,
Bombs still dropping over Baghdad.
While you’re worrying about a flag,
Another family is around the table without dad,
While you’re tripping about a flag,
Syrian children don’t even have a sleeping bag,
While you’re red-faced about a flag,
Another veteran is home in a body bag,
While you’re crying over a flag,
Another child is short grocery bags,
While you shout hate over a flag,
Another young woman destroyed by rape as
privileged white boys in a frat house brag.

Still, you’re bothered about a flag,
While black blood soaks up rags.
While you’re focused on a flag,
Texas, South Fl, Barbuda, Preuto Rico,

And the fact that current President is more up set about this flag; than providing for the people he’s to govern

Why aren’t you mad about the fact he has no clue these are US territories

This was never about the damn flag; but when America is ever forced to face her hypocrisy, white America quickly waves the “unpatriotic” signal

As you call out patriotic rhetoric about a flag,
Only a portion of the nation; less than 60 years ago even

had a right to hold that same flag.
The same people you didn’t want to have it,
You are mad that they don’t want it…?
While you throw rocks and slurs over a flag,
Veterans everywhere are dying at home in silence
because no one is defending them the way they defended this very flag.

As you continue to talk about this Damn flag
You are still in violation of constitutional rights provided under this same flag,
Shall I continue…? Yes. Okay…

This flag you are in defense of; is the same flag Southern States disrespected when they made their own Confederate Flag.

And still, wave in the south to declare
themselves apart from the America
that waved RED WHITE AND BLUE.
This flag is the same flag every immigrant must pledge allegiance to become a citizen in the USA, but parents of students born and raised in the USA want to stop schools from pledging allegiance to that same flag.
This flag’s history is covered in blood that you all want to keep hidden,
But soon as those oppressed under the flag dare to speak out,
You get amnesia about its past and want to defend its honor.
This flag,
This flag,
If only you cared so much about life, liberty, right to religion, right to be happy;
If only you cared about  the poor, broken men and women who fought for this flag
Then yeah I would be with you, mad about this flag too.
This flag,
This flag,
Only serves the white, wealthy and rich,
Even though the Pledge itself…
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.” Francis Bellamy 1892
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” 1923
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”1954
This flag
This Flag
I’m so tired of hearing about this FLAG
Underpaid teachers, cops, and firemen,
Underfunded schools,
Budget cuts,
Programming and polluting our children
But ready for civil unrest over a flag.
This Damn flag
Is more important to you than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,
You don’t  deserve the right to be mad about this flag,
If you are okay with everything else.
